"The Guild stands for safety, standards, improvement and growth in a very old industry. This is important as the industry is otherwise unregulated and customers deserve a quality professional service".
It is now Daniel's role to lead the Guild in a time where the industry is evolving. Currently, there is no legal requirement for chimney sweeps to be trained or qualified; the Guild's aspirations are otherwise and it is the remit of the Guild to raise standards through professionalism and training. Since 2009 the Guild had grown significantly. This growth as well as the Guild’s position within the industry will enable us to positively influence and change many things today and in the years to come helping to steer the industry towards a professional, prosperous and safer tomorrow. The future of the industry is looking extremely positive; with the recent upsurge of the use of renewable energies such as wood fuel, the chimney sweep has become more important than ever. With the rising oil and gas prices as these resources diminish even faster, this is sure to continue on an accelerated curve.
"The Guild is important because it gives a standard to reach; it represents the trade and is continuously improving every day. And of course it is part of the chimney sweeping future, by
raising awareness, training and by doing all this we can save lives".
In 2005, after meeting the Chairman of the Guild at the time and seeing the personal approach and commitment of the Board members, Sascha decided that the Guild was the organisation to join.
In 2005 Sascha was asked to stand as the Public Relations Director and by 2006 he was asked to stand as Vice Chairman.
He quickly found his footing within the Guild and while his primary responsibility as Vice Chairman has been to support the Chairman. Sascha has set about improving relations between the Guild and other sweeping organisations around the world.
Sascha, originally from Germany, can speak German and English fluently which has helped the Guild to forge strong bonds with international organisations enabling the Guild itself to have an international presence.
The future looks fantastic for the Guild and the sweeping trade all over the world as more and more biomass is being used that will always create work for all of us. I can also see the Guild easily growing to double the size in the next few years as higher standards are not only expected but demanded by customers. The Guild, as it grows, is able to provide even more for both its members and customers.
"The public are becoming more and more aware of the importance of using competent and assessed chimney sweeps. The Guild ensures that the very best chimney sweeping service is provided by each and every one of our members".
By 1997 David came to realise that joining a chimney sweep organisation could only be of benefit and after researching the options available he felt the Guild, as a forward thinking group of professionals, were the better fit for him.
David quickly settled in as a member and within 18 months decided that he had more to give to the Guild which led to him being appointed as Guild Assessor in 1998.
Over the years the Training Programme has evolved and David has been at the very forefront ensuring that all of the Guild trainees are of the highest standard before becoming a member.
David feels it is important for chimney sweeps to join the Guild as it not only enables them to prove themselves as professionals and stand out from their unqualified competitors but the Guild provides a national support network. This network is made up of members that are happy to help each other with problems which, when the majority of work is carried out on your own, can be a very comforting network.
Today, not only is David still the Guild Assessor who ensures that every trainee meets the highest standard before becoming a member, but he also holds the role of Treasurer.
The future for the Guild is looking great, we are entering a time where Guild sweeps are being recognised for the professionals that they are.
Public Relations Trustee
"The importance of a well-trained, professional sweep cannot be overstated. The safety of our consumers, their families and their property can be greatly increased by using a Guild member for their chimney sweeping/solid fuel servicing and advice."
By 2007, Lawson had realised that both the Guild and the industry required real change which could only be achieved by taking an active role. This led to his appointment to the Guild’s Education Committee.
He fulfilled this role for two years and in 2009 became the Public Relations Trustee.
While he still has a presence at the Training Programme for new members and provides on-site training days, his role within the Guild has evolved; the vital part of his role is communicating with the consumers, members and the trade.
Educating consumers to the benefits of using a registered sweep is of paramount importance. While the industry is improving, there are still untrained and unregistered chimney sweeps trading which can put lives at risk.
There is also a great deal of work to do to educate both consumers and those within the industry on many aspects of solid fuel use. The current level of incorrect and contradictory information given to consumers regarding appliances, chimneys and fuels means there is a wonderful opportunity for any organisation or individual that wishes to set high standards. Regulation and registration will be of greatest benefit if enforceable. High standards are the prime motivation for all members of the Guild.
"The guild stands for excellence and advancement in the field of chimney sweeping and maintenance."
By 2011, at the request of the Guild’s Board, Stefan took on the position of Technical Trustee. The role demands that Stefan is up to date with technological and regulatory advancements within the industry and that he is able to relay that information to members ensuring the highest levels of service are provided to the end consumer.
Stefan also has a presence at each of the Training Programmes and is heavily involved with ensuring that new members are not only aware of the most up to date methods and theory but inspiring them to continue expanding their knowledge base after their assessment.
The Guild is an organisation which stands for excellence. The Training Programme, standards, support and technical knowhow that the Guild provides its members with enables their service to the consumer to be of the highest standard in the country.
Regulations are constantly changing and as the industry becomes more complex with the introduction of Biomass systems it is imperative that chimney sweeps are fully aware of the most up to date information available.
As the Guild continues to grow it continues to demand tighter regulation to protect both chimney sweeps and consumers. By arming Guild members with the very latest in technological and regulatory advancements it is the belief that this information can help to continually improve the service that members provide to consumers.
