‘Save our Stoves‘ provides sweeps customers with a simple pre-printed postcard to send to their local MSP. There is a letter template for customers, friends and family to complete and email to their MSP. We’ve provided articles and social media posts so members can take direct action and promote the issue via their own social pages. This has undoubtedly helped with the decision to review.
BUT, The review will not take place until September at the earliest and it’s by no means certain what will happen next. We must keep the pressure on.
Of Much Greater Concern
New legislation – the Heat in Buildings Bill will come before the Scottish parliament in due course. The consultation for this bill suggests that wood burning appliances (along with gas and oil etc.) may need to be replaced by the purchaser when a house changes ownership.
We consider it to be disingenuous to include a low carbon sustainable fuel like wood alongside fossil gas and oil. Woodburning appliances should not be lumped in with other ‘direct emission’ appliances which use fossil fuels. The government’s own figures make it clear just how little CO2 is emitted when wood is compared to other heating fuels. Even this small amount will disappear as all industry progressively decarbonises.
Turning up the Heat – take action.
This issue is far from done. It is essential for customers to keep contacting their MSP’s. Sweeps and can make all the difference, using the online tools and the postcards. Every letter arriving with an MSP will help them understand the core issues and strength of feeling amongst stove users.
