There is a serious issue with delamination of the paint coating on the inside surface of some cowls and guards, including the sleeve which fits inside the end of the liner. The guard /chimney can become blocked as the paint coating peels away, so it’s potentially very serious.

It seems there have been a number of such incidents around the country, but we need more evidence if we are to help solve the problem. Sweeps have the evidence and we’ve made it simple for you to get it to us.

Please fill out the questions on the incident report form and submit. Two minutes of your time could help save someone’s life – Cowl / Bird Guard Incident Report – Delaminating powder coating – The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps

We’ve already heard of two cases where the customer called their sweep because the coating had blocked the chimney and set off the CO alarm!! It seems this delamination can occur years after installation so there are some potential accidents waiting to happen. We need your evidence to help fix it before someone is injured or worse.

We have approached other sweep trade associations via The Federation of British Chimney Sweeps and make them aware of the opportunity to help. Working together we can gather information from many sweeps.
